January Update

So, I guess this is my first “official” post of 2019. The last one was more of an hello post than anything content wise. I decided that I wanted to at least provide you updates of what I’ve been getting up to. Even if I don’t get time to write about anything else.

This month has been rather focused on moving my personal life forwards and a lot of home improvement. Alongside that, I’ve been trying to make sure that my work life is correctly balanced with everything else too.

I picked up swimming again, sometime I used to do with a rather intense passion and stopped when I was a teenager. Although the skills are still in my head, my body doesn’t have the response speeds I need. It’s all about training up the invaluable skill of breathing at the right times.

Reading has also been another passion I’ve made sure to dedicate time to. I’m trying to ensure I leave reviews whenever I rate a book this year. It’s yet another way to get back into the swing of writing, much like these posts, and I’m going to provide you those updates here too.

So that’s all for now. My reviews are below, with links to the Goodreads version too. Enjoy!

Book Reviews for January 2019

Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet

This book taught me so much about women in technology. There are so many women in significant positions that I was never ever taught about and it makes me wonder why.

An inspiring book that has made me want to seek out more and would really recommend.

Dynasties: The Rise and Fall of Animal Families

A lovely book with gorgeous pictures. Some of the stories have more information than the show did, but some do just repeat what we already knew from the show.

Iron and Magic The Iron Covenant #1

I read this book kind of out of order, but it really didn’t matter as it can be read independently to the Kate Daniels series.

I adored this book and it’s because of this one that I’m going to read the Daniels series. The magic system is something that I haven’t come across before and the pairing of tech with magic intrigues me.

I really want to read more about Hugh but, in the meantime, I’m going to take a journey with Kate.

Magic Bites Kate Daniels #1

I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as Hugh’s story. Whereas that was more about his character, this is more murder mystery. I didn’t feel like I learnt much about Kate at all.

The book was enjoyable to read, but I don’t think I would be so quick to pick up the next one if it wasn’t for the fact I know some of her history already.

Magic Burns Kate Daniels #2

Things are definitely on the up with this series. It took almost the entire book, but eventually we started to get more information about Kate and her special abilities.

This book focused more on the magic system of the world and it had a nice connection to the previous one. I also enjoyed learning more about The Pack too.

It doesn’t quite push up to the next star rating, for me, but the potential of this series is really starting to come through.

Magic Strikes Kate Daniels #3

Finally we start to hit on what I enjoyed in the Hugh novel.

It starts off telling you the exact same backstory you’ve read in both the other two books, but by the end you have a much fuller picture. Things finally start to go places rather than just “promising” to. By the end of the novel I was ready to jump right into the fourth.

I’m starting to enjoy reading about Kate’s relationships with The Pack and with the entrance of Hugh, I’m hoping the next will provide even more excitement.

Magic Bleeds Kate Daniels #4

If the last book was where it started to turn around, then this one goes on a high speed train ride.

All of a sudden you’re given so much information and Kate’s backstory and it adds so much to the world, and to her character. No longer do you just get told the same information in a slightly different way, instead it expands and evolves wonderfully.

The progress that the story takes is in leaps and bounds. Suddenly the magic of these books is apparent.

It wasn’t perfect, there was still some irritating retellings, but a lot less than before.

Magic Slays Kate Daniels #5

Can I just say, I love Andrea! Not only because she share’s her name with me but because she takes no nonsense. I would like to see her developed a bit more, but I understand that the main focus is on Kate and Curran.

This book was very nearly 5 stars. The only reason it wasn’t is because I found the plot somewhat unmemorable. It seems to exist only to force Kate into potential exposure.

The payoff for the Julie storyline is apparent in the next book, but without that I’m not so sure on whether it would be as satisfactory.

So there we have it! I feel as though my reviews really started to grow over the month and I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop in February too.

    1. I’m quite lucky in that I can read at least 40 minutes a day when I’m commuting to work. I also generally try to read for a little bit before I go to sleep as a way to wind down and rest my eyes from screens. (This is why I have multiple books on the go at once; one on my kindle and one in paper form!)
