Over The Week (July 17 – July 22)

This week I stumbled across two really interesting posts. They were both released earlier in the week so you may have seen them. If you missed them be sure to check them out! They’re both really interesting articles of differing natures. We also have OWLS posts so be sure to have a look at the different topics relating to self-confidence and individuality there.

My Reading

Welcome to the Ballroom – Episode 2
The title to this post doesn’t do it justice. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this post was about the contents of episode 2 of Welcome to the Ballroom. It is about the episode, but about the production. I learnt, from this post, that Mizuno, Kazunori passed away from overwork and this episode was part something he was working on at the time. It’s a moving piece from Sakuga Blog highlighting a major problem in the anime industry.

How to Get into Anime
It probably doesn’t apply to any of you reading this, unless somehow you are completely new to anime and stumbled across this post. In which case welcome! However, I still think this post by Cecilia D’Anastasio at Kotaku is worth a read. I’m at my 9 month mark, or thereabouts, of being “into anime” and, as you might have guessed, I’ve fallen hard. I still found value in this post for series that I haven’t though of watching and the reminder to try a multitude of genres. You won’t love everything but there’s no shame in just moving on to the next series.

July – Mirrors

“When we look in the mirror, what do we see? Do we see ourselves or someone we don’t want to be? For this month’s theme, we will be exploring some of our favorite anime and other pop culture media that redefine individual beauty—inside and out.”

Time of EVE Welcomes Impartiality Through Reflection
Takuto combined a review of Time of EVE with the OWLS brief. The result was a post on how an android found individuality for herself. Go check it out!

Mirrors in Wandering Son: Navigating Visual Gender Norms
It’s Carla’s first post for OWLS. She has a lovely post on transgender individuals and how that’s looked at by Wandering Son. I really enjoyed reading this post so hop over there to read it and be sure to give her a warm welcome.

Mirrors Within The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
This was also my first post on with OWLS. I looked at The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and the different types of self confidence Haruhi and Kyon show.

  1. Oh cool, 9 months of anime. Wow, that’s impressive that you got an anime blog started given the time. Haha I got into anime in primary school but didn’t really blog about anime until I reached university!

Wasn’t aware that you joined OWLS but I’ll check out your post now. 🙂

    1. Thank you!

And yes, I’m pretty new with anime. I started watching Pokemon when I was a lot younger but it took me a long time to come back to it. I was already blogging (rather infrequently) about a variety of stuff so I just changed my blog to be a lot more anime focused.

      1. Oh I see! That makes sense. 🙂 I’m glad that you are blogging more now and haha yes, Pokemon was one I watched when I was a lot younger too.
