Volumes #1 – #5
I particularly enjoyed this comic series. Kamala is the new Ms Marvel, taking over the mantle from Carol Danvers (who is now Captain Marvel). It starts off introducing Kamala, her family and their dynamics with living in the US and trying to uphold traditional values. I found myself connecting with her and some of the struggles that every teenager faces, though she quickly has a lot more to deal with when she gains her powers. How she gained her powers can be quite confusing, luckily I follow the marvel universe to an extent that I knew what had occurred but it did feel like there was some cross over with the events of another comic series and it lacked the explanation. In the end, it doesn’t really affect the story – she has no idea what happened anyway and so the information that you have is the same titular character.
For those of you that know anything about any of the previous Ms Marvel title holders, Kamala is completely different. Although she has the same superhero name, she isn’t the same character. This isn’t a reboot nor does it retcon what has come before it. Instead, it respectfully allows Kamala to understand how to be her own version of Ms Marvel – something that the character struggles with within this volume.
In the end, she’s a teenager who has a suddenly obtained powers and has to figure out how to balance that with her already busy life.
